DES MOINES -- Chet Utesch is two wins away.

The fourth-ranked junior from Akron-Westfield defeated Colton Stoddard of East Buchanan by a 10-2 major decision on Thursday in the Class 1A state wrestling quarterfinals.

"It was a very dominating performance," A-W coach Mark Van Oort said. "(Stoddard) made it to state for a reason. He's a solid wrestler, but Chet really wrestled well."

With the win, Utesch advanced to Friday's semifinal round where he will take on sixth-ranked Brennan McNitt of St. Albert.

Utesch was never in trouble during Thursday's match as he led 2-0 after one period and garnered near-fall points in the second period to lead 5-0 heading into the final period.

Utesch took down Stoddard again and earned three more back points before Stoddard escaped and was awarded a stalling point to give the match its final score.

"We're looking for more," Van Oort said. "I don't see a look of satisfaction in Chet's face, I see determination. I don't think his semifinal match can get here soon enough."

McNitt enters the semifinal match with a 47-1 record and defeated Don Bosco's Austin Demuth by a 3-2 decision in his quarterfinal match.

Demuth was one of two wrestlers to defeat Utesch this season.

Stevenson bows out at 285

Chris Stevenson's stay at state was a short one. The fifth-ranked Le Mars senior heavyweight, who made his state tournament debut on Thursday, dropped both his matches on Thursday and ended his season with a 29-7 record.

Stevenson lost a 1-0 decision to Johnston freshman Jake Scanlan in his opener. Stevenson dropped his consolation round match to Tyler Burrell of Washington (Cedar Rapids) by a 3-0 decision.

K-P's Steffen stays alive in consolation round

Kingsley-Pierson senior Matt Steffen won his second round consolation match as he pinned Teddie Harvey of St. Edmond in 1:06.

Steffen, who has assured himself of a medal, earned a rematch with Emmetsburg/Armstrong-Ringsted's Skyler Rice in Friday's consolation quarterfinals.

Rice pinned Steffen to win the district title last Saturday in Sibley.
