Kathy Jo Heuertz, 48, of rural South Sioux City, Neb., died Thursdday, Feb. 3, 2011, of an apparent heart attack at her residence.

Kathy was born Feb. 14, 1962, in Sioux City, the daughter of Virgil M. and Helen L. (Morgan) Hesse. She grew up in the Hubbard area and graduated from high school. She attended one year of college. She married Jerry Yacevich. She was a letter carrier in Sioux City for 19 years.

On July 3, 2001 she married Richard M. "Rick" Heuertz in South Sioux City.

She was co-owner of Heuertz Ultimate Kennel and Quarter Horses, Inc.

She was an active member of First Lutheran Church in South Sioux City, a member of Lydia Group and participated in the Wednesday Night Meals at the church. She loved to usher.

She was a member of Northwest Iowa Horse Show Association and showed horses for 10 years and received many awards. She was also a certified Midwestern Swimming Association "Stroke and Turn Official."

Being a race car fanatic, Kathy and Rick traveled to Indianapolis numerous times to the Indy 500 and the Brickyard 400 to watch her favorite driver, Tony Stewart.

Her passion in life was her children and following them in their different sporting events.

She also enjoyed her dogs and horses.

Survivors include her husband Rick; a son Jeremy Yacevich of Dakota City, Neb.; three daughters, Kelly and her husband, Mike Morgan of Rochester Hills, Mich., Ashley and her husband, Josh Bendickson, and Heather Yacevich and her special friend, Terry Maddox, all of Omaha, Neb.; three step-sons: Brian and companion Jennifer Rollins of South Sioux City, Travis and his wife, Juliane Heuertz of Pierre, S.D., and Trent and his wife, Tiffany Heuertz of Elk Point, S.D.; a step-daughter, Tobi and her husband, John Pickett of Pierre, S.D.; her mother, Helen Hesse of South Sioux City; a brother, Virgil Hesse, Jr. of Sioux City; a sister, Terri and her husband, David Suhr of Alta; seven step-grandchildren and her extended athletic "Moms" associates.

She was preceded in death by her father Virgil Hesse Sr.; two brothers: Ricky and Brian; and a grandson, Brendan Heuertz.

Funeral services will be 11 a.m. Tuesday at First Lutheran Church in South Sioux City, with the Rev. Jerry Gilbreath officiating. Following the service there will be a lunch in the church fellowship hall for family and friends. Visitation will be at the churchfrom 4 to 8 p.m. today (Monday), with a prayer service at 7 p.m.
