Lawrence "Larry" L. Miles, 72, of Dell Rapids, S.D., died Saturday, Feb. 5, 2011, at his home in Dell Rapids. Larry was born March 5, 1938, in Chester, S.D., the son of Harold and Evelyn (Birnbaum) Miles. He attended school and graduated from Egan in 1956.
Larry married Janice Amdahl on May 27, 1961, in Flandreau and together they had nine children.
He was a member of the Army National Guard 147th Field Artillery and was activated in 1961 during the Berlin Crisis.
Larry was owner and mechanic of Miles Service from 1963 to 1999. He served as Moody County Commissioner for 12 years. Larry farmed north of Colman from 1972 to 1997. Jan preceded him in death June 19, 1995.
Larry married Mary (Renken) Schmidt Oct. 10, 1997 in Dell Rapids. They moved to Dell Rapids in 2007. He enjoyed hunting and fishing and a recent trip to Alaska in 2009.
Larry's health was impacted by a diagnosis of brain cancer and the affects of its treatment causing a long, hard-fought battle of 16 years.
Larry was a member of St. Peter Catholic Church, Colman.
Larry enjoyed life to the fullest as long as he was able and loved his family time with his grandkids.
Larry is survived by his wife, Mary Miles of Dell Rapids; three daughters, Monica (Kevin) McMahon of Trent, Pam (Keith) Kepford of Colman, Christi (Mike) Brown of Glyndon, Minn.; six sons, Jeff (Amy) Miles of Dell Rapids, Tony (Kellee) Miles of Dell Rapids, Scott Miles of Colman, Andy Miles of Colman, Jay Miles of Egan, Robert (Holly) Miles of Meade, Kan.; two step-sons, Dennis (Stacey) Schmidt of Brandon, S.D., and Dean (Sabrina) Schmidt of New Underwood, S.D.; 24 grandchildren, Kendra Eng, Kayla McMahon, Kassie, Brock and Karli Kepford, Thomas and Nathan Miles, Megan, Jenna and Gavin Miles, Tyrell, Tell and Mary Miles, Mikaela, McKenzie, and Melayna Brown, Emily Miles, Danielle and Laney Miles, Lane and Jonathan Schmidt, Ethan, Ozella and Joseph Schmidt; one great-grandson, Jadon Eng; one brother, Lowell (JoAnn) Miles of Hartford, S.D.; one sister, Mary (Jim) LeBrun of Ames; six brothers and sisters-in-law, Judy Miles of Colman, Denny (Helen) Renken, David (Judy) Renken, Shirley (Bill) Ruhland, all of Le Mars, Sharon (Jerry) Neil of Star Prairie, Wis., Anita (Larry) Mitzel of Sioux Falls, S.D., and several nieces and nephews.
He is preceded in death by his first wife, Jan; his parents, and his brother, Leslie.
Mass of Christian Burial will be 11 a.m. Wednesday at St. Peter Catholic Church in Colman with burial in the parish cemetery. Visitation will begin at 4 p.m. Tuesday with a 4 p.m. Catholic Daughter rosary at the church and a 7 p.m. prayer service.
The Skroch Funeral Chapel of Colman is in charge of arrangements.
