Relay gears up with dodgeball tourney, chili cookoff
The Plymouth County 2011 Relay For Life committee has set dates for the annual Relay event and also a fundraiser activity.
The 2011 Relay For Life will be held June 10 from 6 p.m. to 2 a.m., at the Remsen track, according to co-chairwomen Shelly Clay and Stacey Kliever.
Relay For Life is an American Cancer Society event held in communities across the country as a way to raise money for education and research in the fight against cancer.
The committee is also putting the finishing touches on plans for a Dodgeball Tournament/Chili Cookoff March 12 at the Kingsley-Pierson High School.
Both the tournament and cookoff begin at 11:30 a.m.
"The chili cookoff will end when the chili runs out," said Clay.
Plans call for the dodgeball tournament to end at approximately 7 p.m.
The tournament will be a double elimination tournament, with teams consisting of six players. There is a $30 entry fee per team.
Those wanting to taste during the chili cookoff are asked to donate $5 for a ticket, which entitles the individual to taste-test each chili, and vote for their favorite with their ticket in exchange for a bowl of that chili.
The winner of the cookoff will receive a trophy.
Those wishing to enter the dodgeball tournament or chili cookoff should call Clay at 548-5499 or Kliever at 540-8135. Deadline to sign up is March 1.
In addition to the tournament and cookoff, volunteers will be selling daffodils for the American Cancer Society's Daffodil Days and luminaria bags which will line the track at the Relay in June.
"We invite all our Plymouth County Relay teams to have a bake sale at the event for their own fundraising, too," said Clay.
Clay and Kliever are encouraging residents across Plymouth County to put together teams for the June 10 Relay for Life.
The Team Kick-off will be held Monday, Feb. 28, from 5-7 p.m. at the VFW in Remsen.
The kick-off offers a time for team captains to pick up team packets in preparation for Relay For Life 2011.
"We are hoping for a great turnout at kickoff," said Kliever.
Refreshments will be available.
Volunteers are needed for all the activities hosted by the Relay For Life committee.
"We need volunteers for committees which are doing advance work for the Relay as well as people to help in various capacities the night of the Relay," said Clay.
Anyone interested in volunteering for the events should contact Clay or Kliever.
