Dorothy E. Swanberg, 83, of Kingsley, died peacefully, Monday, Jan. 24, 2011, at the Kingsley Nursing & Rehab Center in Kingsley.

Dorothy was born June 6, 1927, at Kingsley, the daughter of Ray and Edna (Coatsworth) Hawkins. A lifelong resident of Kingsley she graduated from Kingsley High School and began working at the Kingsley State Bank where she worked for 54 years, retiring in 1997.

She married William Richardson May 6, 1946. William died in 1993. On July 10, 1999, she married John R. (Jack) Swanberg.

Dorothy was a member of the Congregational United Church of Christ, P.E.O., and the G.S. Order of the Eastern Star.

She enjoyed cooking, gardening and golf; her hole-in-one on the ninth hole at Brookside was a highlight.

She will always be remembered for her gentle, loving nature and for her extravagant Christmas cookies.

She will be lovingly remembered by her husband, Jack; a sister, Wilma Hauck of Kingsley; a brother, Elwin R. "Al" Hawkins of Seattle, Wash.; nephews, Dr. James M. (Cynthia) Hauck of Spirit Lake, and Timothy (Kim) Hauck of Grand Prairie, Texas; nieces, Rebecca (Byron) Phillips of Fairmont, Minn., Julie (Greg) Wilson of Seattle, Wash., Diane (Mike) Grennan of Seattle, Wash.; stepdaughters, Annette (Charlie) Allen of Columbus, Ohio, and Janelle (Don) Swanberg of Davenport; and stepson, J.C. (Gail) Swanberg of Le Mars. Dorothy is also survived by many grand-nieces and nephews and step-grandchildren.

Dorothy was preceded in death by her parents and her first husband, William Richardson.

Funeral services will be 10:30 a.m. Thursday at the Congregational United Church of Christ in Kingsley, with the Rev. Robert Blair officiating. Burial will be at Kingsley Cemetery. Visitation will be today (Wednesday) from 5-7 p.m. with the family present and a prayer service at 7 p.m., all at the Rohde Funeral Home in Kingsley. Rohde Funeral Home is handling the funeral arrangements.

Memorials may be donated to the Cosmos Masonic Lodge #470 of Kingsley.
