Arthur Meis, 92, of Le Mars, died Thursday, Jan. 13, 2011, at Floyd Valley Hospital in Le Mars.
Art was born Dec. 1, 1918, at rural Le Mars, the son of Henry and Anna (Wagner) Meis. He was raised and educated in the Le Mars area and received his education in the rural school system. He then assisted his father in farming.
On Nov. 25, 1941, he married Christine Plendl at Oyens. The couple made their home near Oyens where they were engaged in farming until 1961 when he retired from farming and turned over the operation of his farm to his son Marvin. He then began employment with Oyens Co-Op for 20 years, retiring in March 1981.
Art was a member of St. Catherine's Catholic Church and Oyens Columbus Club. He also enjoyed fishing and gardening.
Survivors include his wife Christine; two sons, Dennis and his wife Janice, Paul and his wife Kathy, all of Le Mars; two daughters, Kathleen Schumann and her husband, Edward of Brainerd, Minn., and Diane Dunham of Marshalltown; 15 grandchildren, one step-granddaughter, 15 great-grandchildren; two sisters-in-law, Rita Plendl of Minneapolis, Minn., and Shirley Plendl of Le Mars; and numerous nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents; one son, Marvin; one grandson, Dean Meis; one son-in-law, Edward Dunham; three sisters, Angeline Meis and Mathilda Meis, and Isabel Plendl and her husband, Roman; and one brother, Joseph and his wife, Elizabeth Meis.
Funeral services were 10:30 a.m. Saturday at St. Catherine's Catholic Church in Oyens with the Rev. William McCarthy and the Rev. Eugene Murray officiating. Burial was in the St. Catherine's Catholic Cemetery in Oyens. Visitation was anytime after 4 p.m. Friday, with a vigil prayer service at 7 p.m. at Fisch Funeral Home & Monument in Remsen.
Casketbearers were Jon Dunham, Aaron Schumann and Jared, Lindsey, Jeff and Ryan Meis.
