Vera Hermina Mammen was born May 30, 1913, on the family farm in Preston Township, Plymouth County, the daughter of Robert and Meta (Pageler) Grosenheider. She was baptized and confirmed in the Lutheran faith at St. John's Evangelical Lutheran Church, rural Akron, and attended country school near her home.
Vera and Carl W. "Chuck" Mammen were united in marriage March 30, 1937. The couple farmed in Grant Township in Plymouth County for four years. They then moved to a farm in Stanton Township. In 1967 Chuck and Vera moved to Le Mars. They retired from farming in 1973.
She was a member of St. John's Lutheran Church in Le Mars. Vera was active in Circle and assisted with the prayer chain until her health failed and she could no longer participate.
She will be lovingly remembered by her two daughters, Joanne North of Bonita Springs, Fla., and Wanda Mammen of Le Mars; one brother and his wife, Robert and Violet Grosenheider of Le Mars; a sister-in-law, Bernice Grosenheider of Le Mars; and several nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents; husband Carl "Chuck" Mammen on Aug. 28, 2010; three sisters, Elsie Oetken, Ann Jones and Josie Popken; a brother, Fred Grosenheider; and two sons-in-law, William Goetz and Charles North.
Funeral services will be 2 p.m. Thursday at St. John's Lutheran Church in Le Mars. The Rev. Greg Gabriel will officiate. Burial will follow at Memorial Cemetery in Le Mars. Visitation will begin at 2 p.m. Wednesday at the Mauer - Johnson Funeral Home of Le Mars. The family will be present to greet friends from 5-7 p.m. Visitation will resume at 1 p.m. Thursday at the church.
