SPIRIT LAKE -- The Le Mars boys basketball team got off to a fast start and cruised to a 56-38 Lakes Conference win on Friday at Spirit Lake.
Paxton Strub had a team-high 22 points and added five rebounds while Mike Ahlers added 10 points, seven rebounds and five assists. Austin Homan had 10 points and five rebounds to go along with three steals and Kyan Ludwig chipped in with four assists.
"We played a very solid game," Le Mars coach Dave Irwin said. "Defensively we did some really good things at times and we did a lot of nice things offensively against their man-to-man defense."
The 'Dogs rushed out to a 16-2 lead after the first quarter before Spirit Lake switched to a zone in the second quarter. Irwin said it was the first time the 'Dogs have seen that particular look this year.
"It was a good time of year for our team to see that," he said. "We're probably going to see a lot of teams throw that at us throughout the year."
Irwin was concerned about his team's mediocre free throw shooting, saying the 'Dogs will probably lose a game they should win if that is not corrected.
Le Mars (3-0, 2-0) returns to action on Tuesday at Emmetsburg before hosting top-ranked (Class 2A) Western Christian on Friday.
"Both games (against Emmetsburg last season) were decent games and I'm expecting a good game again on Tuesday night," Irwin said.
"Le Mars-Emmetsburg games are always pretty competitive."
