The Le Mars Community junior varsity girls basketball team started its season with a 3-0 record last week.
The Lady Bulldogs started the season with a 38-31 win at Unity Christian last Tuesday.
"Unity came back and tied it in the fourth quarter at 31," said coach Gabe Davis, whose squad led 25-18 at the start of the final quarter. "They made some nice shots and we didn't shoot real well in the second half."
The Lady Bulldogs cruised to a 22-8 halftime advantage after leading 12-2 at the end of the first quarter.
Ashley Phelan and Mary Kate Eckstaine each scored 10 points to lead the squad. Phelan also contributed four rebounds and seven steals.
"We played hard and it was nice to see how we could play in our first game out," Davis said.
The Lady Bulldogs continued play at the Hy-Vee Holiday Tournament on Friday and Saturday.
Le Mars eked out a 57-54 win over Sioux City East on Friday afternoon.
"East was a very good team with good athletes," Davis said. "I was very happy with our offense."
The Lady Bulldogs, who led at each of the quarter breaks, scored 29 points in the first half and led 29-25 at the intermission.
"We had a six-to-eight point lead a few times and couldn't put (East) away," Davis said. "That is something we need to work on."
Phelan scored a team-high 12 points while Carolyn Ahlers and Meredith Rand each scored 10. Rand also had four steals in the win.
On Saturday afternoon, Le Mars claimed a 43-34 win over Hinton.
"We gave up 34 points tonight and our goal is to give up less than 40, so that was great," said Davis, whose team limited Hinton to just four points in the final quarter. "I was very happy with how the girls played down the stretch."
The Lady Bulldogs were boosted by a 17-for-22 showing at the free throw line in the game, which they led 24-18 at halftime.
Emily Pick led the team with 14 points while Molly Renken scored 10.
Phelan contributed seven rebounds and five steals.
"Overall this was a great team win," Davis said. "We played well on both ends of the court. We are going to continue to get better each night out."
The Lady Bulldogs return to action against Storm Lake as Lakes Conference play begins on Tuesday, Dec. 7.
