Dorothy Schumacher, 86, of Hawarden, died Tuesday, Sept. 21, 2010, at the Hillcrest Health Care Center in Hawarden.

Dorothy Lavonne Schumacher was born Jan. 24, 1924, in Hawarden, the daughter of Carl and Cora (Munson) Anderson. She married Leo Schumacher on Feb. 16, 1944. In the first years of marriage Leo and Dorothy farmed south of Beresford, S.D. Then in the spring of 1959 they moved south of Hawarden to the farm.

Dorothy worked for many years at Coilcraft, then Otis Radio. In the 1970s she cooked at school and at Central Catering until she retired.

Dorothy was a good cook and known for her homemade bread and cinnamon rolls, always a treat when you were there on the weekend!

She was a member of St. Theresa's Catholic Church in Beresford, S.D., and then at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Hawarden. She was a member of the St. Mary's Guild and always helped in anyway she could at church. She was a member of the West Sioux Saddle Club for many years, always helping at the horse shows and soup suppers.

Dorothy loved being a Foster Grandparent and helping out at the CDC in Hawarden. She enjoyed how all the little kids called her "Grandma Dorothy".

She is survived by her six children, Lawrence Schumacher of Hudson, S.D., Anthony "Tony" and wife, Lois Schumacher of Le Mars, Alan and wife, Cheryl Schumacher of Huron, S.D., Charlene Schumacher of Hawarden, Teresa and husband, Ivan Huenink of Ireton, and Mary Schumacher and special friend, Nathan Dorhout of Rock Valley; 18 grandchildren; 21 great-grandchildren; 11 great-great-grandchildren; sister-in-law, Iris Anderson of Sioux City; and nephews and nieces.

Dorothy was preceded in death by her parents; husband; a daughter, Rita in infancy; her sister, Myrtle "Toots"; brothers and their wives, Norma and Mabel, Ken, Palmer, Lee and Margaret, Lindy and Marilyn; her brothers-in-law, and sisters-in-law on the Schumacher side, George and Lorraine Schumacher, Gregory and Elizabeth Schumacher, Laurence and Edie Schumacher, Joe Schumacher, Anthony and Dorothy Schumacher, Katie and John Rembe, Clara and Walt Busch; and nephews and nieces.

Mass of Christian Burial will be 10:30 a.m. Friday at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Hawarden with the Rev. Roger Linnan celebrating. Burial will follow in the Grace Hill Cemetery. Visitation will be from noon to 4 p.m. today (Thursday) at Porter Funeral Home in Hawarden and will continue at the church with a prayer service at 7 p.m. Condolences may be sent to www.porterfuneralhomes.com.
