Marguerite Wilma Bass was born Aug. 29, 1915, in Marcus, the daughter of W.W. "William" and Nora (Kracke) Bass. When she was three years old her mother died. Her father later married Blanche Ulstad. Marguerite attended and graduated from Marcus High School. Following high school she received her teaching certificate and taught country school.
She was united in marriage to Donald Petry in 1936 in Elk Point, S.D. The couple lived briefly in Long Beach, Calif., before returning to Iowa and settling in Le Mars to raise their children. Donald died in 1958.
Marguerite eventually went to work for Westmar College where she had worked as a secretary to the dean and later as the secretary to the president of Westmar until her retirement in 1985.
While living in Le Mars, Marguerite was a member of the E.U.B. Church which later became Calvary United Methodist Church and recently The United Methodist Church of Le Mars. She taught the nursery class for more than 20 years and volunteered and assisted with the United Methodist Women for many years.
Family was always a priority for Marguerite. She always enjoyed having family over to her "porch" to watch parades on Central Avenue. Her children and grandchildren cherished family gatherings and holidays at her home.
