Richard 'Dick' Held

Richard G. "Dick" Held, 58, of rural Hinton, died unexpectedly at his home near Hinton, Monday, Aug. 9, 2010.

Richard Gary Held was born Sept. 21, 1951, in Sioux City, one of two boys born to Howard and Evelyn (Madsen) Held. He graduated from Hinton High School in 1971. Richard continued his education at Western Iowa Tech Community College in Sioux City, Iowa where he majored in animal marketing.

He used his education to farm with his parents and brother Mark near Hinton, specializing in Black Angus cattle.

Dick was a member of the Hinton United Methodist Church. He also belonged to the Plymouth County Cattlemen's Association, American Angus Association, Farm Bureau, the Pioneer Machinery Club, and the Town and Country Toy Club.

His interest in history led him to the Siouxland Historical Railroad Museum and the Mid America Air Museum in Sioux City.

Dick was an avid reader who enjoyed westerns and history novels. He also liked to watch old westerns and historical movies.

He will be lovingly remembered by his mother Evelyn; a brother and his wife, Mark and Kaye Held; a niece Danica Held, all of rural Hinton; a nephew Ben Held of St. Cloud, Minn.; and many aunts, uncles, and cousins.

He was preceded in death by is father Howard on June 28, 1999; and several aunts, uncles and cousins.

Funeral services will be at 10:30 a.m. Thursday at the Hinton United Methodist Church in Hinton. The Rev. Neva Thorn-Perdue will officiate. Burial will follow at Graceland Park Cemetery in Sioux City. Visitation will begin at 2 p.m. today (Wednesday) at the Mauer - Johnson Funeral Home of Le Mars. The family will be present from 6-8 p.m. with a prayer service 7 p.m. There will also be one hour of visitation at the church prior to the funeral.
