A Le Mars day care teacher has been hired to fill the new position of preschool teacher at Le Mars Community Schools.
School board members approved a contract for Ashley Swenson, who has been the preschool teacher at Small Wonders Preschool at Le Mars Day Care, Inc.
Swenson will teach in the newly approved preschool program at Le Mars Community Schools.
Classes will be held at Clark Elementary School.
The district will offer two half-day sessions, each with a maximum of 10 students.
Money for the preschool program for the 2010-11 school year comes from a grant through the Statewide Voluntary Preschool Program for 4-Year-Old Children.
School board members approved the application in May and the district was notified in early June that its grant application had been approved.
The grant application submitted by the LCS district requested $67,500 to cover a teacher's salary and benefits, supplies, equipment and transportation costs, according to school officials.
Swenson's contract states a salary of $37,377.
Agreements with Western Iowa Tech Community College (WITCC) and Mid-Sioux Opportunity, Inc. Headstart were also approved by the Le Mars Community School District (LCSD) board of education Monday.
The agreement with WITCC is for the purpose of providing joint use of computer equipment and a computer lab in the Le Mars Community Schools.
According to the agreement, WITCC currently has access to the computer lab in the Le Mars Community Middle School to offer college credit and community education computer courses on weekday evenings and on Saturdays.
That area is referred to as Computer Lab No. 1 in the agreement.
In the Le Mars Community High School, WITCC has purchased and installed the equipment required for a computer lab, known as Computer Lab #2.
That purchase includes 20 computers for student use, one computer for instructor use, as well as 21 lab chairs and other necessary equipment.
LCSD will provide maintenance of computers and software in Computer Lab No. 2.
LCSD has priority access to the two labs from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday-Friday. WITCC will have priority access to computer Lab No. 2 from 6:30-8 a.m. and 4-10 p.m. Monday through Friday and during the day Saturdays.
The agreement is the same as those signed in the past, according to Superintendent Dr. Todd Wendt.
An agreement between the school district and Mid-Sioux Opportunity, Inc. Headstart provide transportation to children of Le Mars Head Start who are within the LCSD boundaries and neighboring school district boundaries.
According to the agreement, Head Start will provide a 22 passenger school bus and will retain ownership of the business.
The LCSD will serve as an independent contractor, providing a bus driver and maintenance for the bus, including housing it at the district's bus barn.
The district is reimbursed $1.50 per mile, according to the contract.
The agreement runs from Sept. 7, through May 31, 2011.
Wendt told board members the contract is similar to those previously held with Head Start.
