Mike Ahlers finished up his tennis season with a seventh-place finish at the Class 1A state tournament on Saturday at Byrne's Park Tennis Center in Waterloo.
"That's a pretty awesome finish for a junior - I'm very proud," Le Mars coach Bill Dalton said. Ahlers defeated Davenport Assumption senior John Rohlf 6-7 (3-7), 6-4, 1-0 (4) in the fifth-plate match.
"He played a lot of tennis today," Dalton said. "I'm proud of the effort and how he gutted it out and his will to stay in that match.
Ahlers fell to the seventh-place match after a consolation semifinal loss to Waterloo Columbus' James McManus in his first match on Saturday. McManus defeated Ahlers 6-0, 6-2 and went on to place fifth overall.
Ahlers finished 3-2 on the weekend after a first-round loss to top-seeded Jim Nora of Waterloo Columbus by a 6-1, 6-2 margin.
But Ahlers bounced back with a pair of victories in the consolation bracket.
Ahlers defeated Jeff Yanda 6-2, 6-1 and defeated Tucker Henderson of Davis-Bloomfield 7-6 (10-8), 6-1 in Friday's consolation action to advance to the placing matches on Saturday.
"That really opened the door for (Ahlers)," Dalton said. "(Henderson) really ran out of gas. I'm very proud. He gutted out that last match with his mental concentration. He out-toughed the kid.
