Eugene Norroy Helmers, 99, of Canon City, Colo., and a Rock Rapids native, died Wednesday, Feb. 17, 2010.
Eugene was born Aug. 7, 1910, in Rock Rapids. He married his first wife, Berniece Irene Van Buskirk July 11, 1942. He cleared forest land in northern Minnesota and South Dakota for many years. Eugene then moved to Colorado in 1958 and worked as a rancher.
He later operated a lot and feed store. Eugene married his second wife, Ruby Shade, Jan. 14, 1978, and was married for 32 years.
He was member of the Greydene Baptist Church in Caņon City, Colo.
He is survived by his current wife of 32 years, Ruby Helmers; sister, Laura (Helmers) Schroeder; daughter, Bonnie (Jerry) Gassman; grandchildren, Daron Walter, Sheila (Bruce) Leinen and Lloyd Eugene Nicholes; great-grandchildren, Nicole, Brittany, Trent and Trevor; step-children, Darlene Whitlatch, Melvin (Linda) Shade, and Ron (Wanda) Shade; many step-grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and many nieces and nephews.
Eugene was preceded in death by his parents, Minnie Pearl (Weatherly) Helmers and Henry Hiram Helmers; sister Bernice (Helmers) Athens, first wife, Berniece Irene Helmers; daughter, Connie Nichols; son-in-law, Douglas Walter; step son-in-law, Al Whitlatch.
Services were held at 10 a.m. Saturday, Feb. 20, at Greydene Baptist Church. Internment will be held at Memorial Park Cemetery, Sioux City, Wednesday, Feb. 24, with a 10 a.m. graveside service.
Arrangements under the direction of Adrian Comer Garden Chapel of Pueblo, Colo. Sioux City arrangements are under the direction of Meyer Brothers Morningside Chapel.
