Council gives first reading approval to code changes

Le Mars City Council members Tuesday, following a public hearing, gave first reading approval to an ordinance amending the city's Fire Prevention Code from the International Fire Code 2006 edition to the 2009 edition.

Members also gave first reading approval after a public hearing to the city's sign code ordinance to update terminology and incorporate the ICC Zoning Code, 2009 edition, into the present ordinance.

Jason Vacura, city code officer, said the action resulted in only limited code changes.

Among them is establishing a time limit that now will be imposed on temporary signs requiring a city permit.

Council members, in other action, reappointed Bill Bomgaars, John Grosenheider and Rex Knapp to four-year terms on the Le Mars Housing Review Board.

Mayor Dick Kirchoff said he is hopeful the board, "somewhat inactive" during the present period, can be "rejuvenated" in its responsibilities on behalf of Le Mars residents.
