No overnight street parking by courthouse

Thursday, December 17, 2009
Some street parking near the Plymouth County Courthouse will be off-limits overnight, if a decision by the Plymouth County Supervisors goes through.

Vehicles parked overnight on the streets west and south of the courthouse are causing snow plow problems, explained Supervisor Don Kass during Tuesday's supervisor meeting.

County plows clear the parking on the streets around the courthouse and are unable to maneuver around vehicles, Kass explained. If plow drivers try, their attempt usually results in dumping snow in the handicap-accessible parking, he added.

The supervisors agreed "No Overnight Parking" signs should be posted on the south and west streets only on the sides of the streets nearest the courthouse.

The ruling will be in effect year-round, Supervisor Craig Anderson said.

"That way we're not deciding when summer starts and winter ends," he said.

County Auditor Stacey Feldman visited with Le Mars city officials to iron out the details.

The board of supervisors will make a final decision during their regular Dec. 29 meeting.

After that meeting, they will seek Le Mars City Council's collaboration on the parking rule. WIth council approval, the no overnight parking rule will become an enforceable offense, punishable with a ticket or the vehicle being towed.

When will the "Overnight" hours for this proposed policy begin? Are we talking 6PM? 7PM? Whenever it gets dark? or is it more like midnight or 1AM? I have a friend who lives one block south of the courthouse, and whenever I go to a gathering there, I park in the diagonal parking just west of the courthouse. I don't mind the block walk. I hope in the future I can still do that.
