Richard E. Zimmerman, 99, of Le Mars, died Wednesday, Nov. 25, 2009, at Floyd Valley Hospital in Le Mars.
Richard Edward Zimmerman, also known as "Zim" or "Dick" was born Nov. 18, 1910, to Richard H. and Elsiena Zimmerman on the family farm in Elgin Township, rural Plymouth County.
Richard managed the Farmer's Union Coop in Sioux City for a number of years. In 1947, he moved to Hawarden, and operated the Northwest Iowa Seed Company for several years with his brother-in-law, Joe Mohan. He later returned to farming near Le Mars.
In later years, Richard was an active supporter of the Plymouth County Historical Museum in Le Mars. Three years ago, Richard and his wife, Doris, moved to The Abbey of Le Mars.
Survivors include his wife, Doris Zimmerman of Le Mars; a son, Dennis Zimmerman and his wife Vicky of Duluth, Minn.; three stepchildren: Jim Eyers and his wife Shirley of West Point, Christina Eyres and her husband Jeffrey Sales of Waterloo, and MaryAnn Eyers of Waterloo; a brother, George Zimmerman and his wife Trudy of Coronado, Calif.; 11 grandchildren, 15 great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.
Abiding by his wishes, Richard has donated his body to the University of South Dakota School of Medicine. A Celebration of Life Service will be 10:30 a.m. Saturday, Dec. 5, at the Presbyterian United Church of Christ in Le Mars with the Rev. Jan Christensen officiating.
