Lois Johnson, 76, of Le Mars, died Friday, Nov. 13, 2009, at Plymouth Manor Care Center in Le Mars.

Lois Elaine Utesch was born July 5, 1933, in Plymouth County, the daughter of Edward and Cora (Casler) Utesch. She was raised in Le Mars and graduated from Le Mars Central High School in 1952. Following high school as a young woman, Lois worked for the Le Mars Savings Bank.

She was united in marriage to Melvin Johnson Sept. 7, 1958 at St. John's Lutheran Church in Le Mars. Lois and Melvin settled on a farm south of Craig. Melvin died at the young age of 43 in 1978.

Lois remained on the farm until moving to Park Place Estates in July 2009 and later to Plymouth Manor in September.

Lois was a proud member of St. John Lutheran Church in Craig where she had taught Sunday school, attended circle, was a member of the Alter Guild, and had served on the church council.

She enjoyed spending time with family and friends. She also enjoyed gardening, square dancing, puzzles, knitting, cross stitching and quilting.

Survivors include her sons and their families: Charles "Chuck" Johnson and his wife Susan and their children Melanie and Megan of rural Le Mars, Robert "Bob" Johnson and his wife Sharon and their children Matthew, Aaron and Ashley of rural Le Mars and Mike Johnson and his fiancée Brenda James and their children Drew and Derek Johnson, and Kosley and Samantha of rural Le Mars; a sister, Donna Whitaker of Frisco, Texas; and a brother, Edward "Buzz" Utesch of rural Le Mars; and several nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her husband Melvin and his parents, Onno and Anna Johnson; her parents, Edward and Cora (Casler) Utesch; a sister, Joyce Witt and her husband Don; two bothers-in-law, Phil Whitaker and Lester Johnson; and a sister-in-law, Marilyn Utesch.

Funeral services will be 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at St. John Lutheran Church, Craig, with the Rev. Sarah Nye officiating. Interment will be in the church cemetery. Visitation will be after 2 p.m. today (Monday) at the Carlsen Funeral Home in Le Mars with the family present to greet friends after 5 p.m. followed by a 7 p.m. prayer service. Visitation will continue Tuesday morning at the church from 9:30 a.m. until service time.

Pallbearers will be Drew Johnson, Derek Johnson, Matthew Johnson, Mark Utesch, David Witt, and Kosley McCown. Honorary casket bearers will be Melanie Johnson, Megan Johnson, Aaron Johnson, Ashley Johnson, Danyel Rice, and Samantha James.
