Gehlen Catholic hosts Veteran's Day Prayer Service

Monday, November 9, 2009
Gehlen Catholic School will host a Veteran's Day Prayer Service at 8:45 a.m. Wednesday in the Gehlen Catholic gym.

Members of the community, past and present servicemen and women and their families are invited to attend the service.

Guest speaker will be Gary Tillman, nurse anesthetist at Floyd Valley Hospital in Le Mars. Gary and his wife, Elaine, are the parents of Michelle ('98), Jake ('01) Scott ('03) and David, a senior at Gehlen Catholic.

Scott Tillman is a Specialist for the Army's Striker Brigade in Afghanistan.

Shortly after being deployed this July, Scott's best friend paid the ultimate sacrifice - he gave his life for our country - while serving alongside Tillman in Afghanistan.

Wasmer American Legion Post Commander Larry Baer will educate those in attendance on "Taps." The service will end with a 21- gun salute.

Finally this year, Gehlen Catholic will unveil the "Wall of Honor."

The Wall of Honor will be a permanent display featuring 5x7" pictures of loved ones of the Gehlen Catholic family who are currently or have served in the armed services.

Pictures may be submitted to Director of Campus Ministries, Lisa Sitzmann, at the school.

The Veteran's Day Prayer Service will begin at 8:45 a.m. in the Gehlen Catholic gymnasium. It is open to Catholics and non-Catholics alike; active, retired, and reservists and their families in Plymouth County.

Rolls and coffee will be served following in the Kolker Library & Media Center.

The "Wall of Honor" is a great idea! As America continues on the path of secularization, may we pause to remember and commemorate those that sacrificed much for our freedoms, including the freedom of religion. There has been an email circulating that points out that freedom isn't free, and our veterans know that first-hand. God bless them and their families.
