Museum to host railroading program, ethnic food fair

Monday, October 19, 2009
Railroading in Plymouth County and ethnic foods of the area will be the focus of a program Sunday at the Plymouth County Historical Museum.

The Rev. Gary Landsness of St. John's Lutheran Church, ELCA, Le Mars, will present a program on railroading at 1:30 p.m. in the museum's Music Room on the main floor.

Landsness, with help from his son, Daniel, has researched Plymouth County rail history.

In addition to his presentation, the Railroad Room on third floor will be featured. The late Floyd Powell, a former depot agent from Le Mars, donated many of the artifacts in the room.

Then at 3 p.m. doors the Ethnic Food Fair will open in "Old Central" Gym. This sixth annual event will feature ethnic foods prepared by Plymouth County residents.

Many booths are expected, with the following already committed to attend: Belize, Ivette Bowen and friends of Le Mars; Bohemian, Marian Baker and Wilma Jessen of Le Mars; Luxembourg, Myrt Weiler and Ethel Heidisch of Remsen; English, Glada Koerselman of Le Mars; Danish, John Schneider of rural Le Mars; American frontier, Paul Williams of Hinton; Dalton Days' Ghost Town corn dish, Judy Bowman of Dalton; and All-American Root Beer Stand, the Plymouth County Historical Museum.

Clover Sanow of Remsen will be at the keyboard.

A small admission to the Ethnic Food Fair will go to help the museum in its continuing effort to preserve the Plymouth County history.

Anyone who would like to host an ethnic food fair booth should contact the museum immediately at 546-7002. There is no charge for the booth, although the ethnic food fair exhibitor is responsible for the samples shared with the crowd.

The museum will be open during its regular 1-5 p.m. Sunday hours with all five floors of the museum open to the public. Both an elevator and a ramp make the museum completely handicapped accessible.

Admission to the museum is free, although freewill donations are welcome. The Museum is located at 335 First Ave. S.W., Le Mars.
