The Le Mars freshman football team used a strong second half to pull away from visiting Spirit Lake on Monday to turn out a 41-0 win in its second-to-last contest of the season.
"We had so many kids do so many things well tonight that it is hard to point out just one or two guys," coach Gabe Davis said. "That is a good thing. This group is a team and we do good things in the future as long as they stay a team."
The Bulldogs led 15-0 at halftime before a Brennan Buss 37-yard interception return for a touchdown jump-started a 26-point second half.
"Our defense was awesome again tonight," Davis said. "We have been challenging them all year to get a score on defense and we said it again tonight at half time.
"The kids made the plays and did an excellent job. They got the score they wanted and it was a team score. (Travis) Kinney tipped and Buss returned it. There were others that were blocking to pave the way."
Kinney put the 'Dogs on the board early with a 6-yard touchdown run in the first quarter. Evan Richards completed a 30-yard touchdown pass to Joey Husk in the second quarter to give Le Mars a two touchdown lead.
Kendall Candor added touchdown runs of 55 and 32 yards sandwiched around a Buss 23-yard touchdown run in the second half.
Candor finished with 111 yards and two touchdowns on just six carries. Kinney carried seven times for 71 yards and a touchdown and Buss rushed five times for 33 yards and a score.
Richards completed 4-of-7 pass attempts for 70 yards and the touchdown strike to Husk.
Kinney also led the 'Dogs on defense as he recorded 12.5 tackles, including three for loss.
"Travis Kinney played very well tonight," Davis said. "He made some big hits to start the game on defense and some nice runs on offense. He usually doesn't play a lot of offense but with some injuries he is needed and he did wonderful."
Chris Hiserote had seven tackles, including one for loss and Brody Mathey had seven tackles, including one for loss, and an interception.
Buss finished with 4.5 tackles, including two sacks and 3.5 for loss. Connor Delfs had 4.5 tackles, including one sack and 1.5 for loss. Candor had 5.5 tackles, including two for loss.
The 'Dogs recorded 13 tackles for loss and two interceptions.
Le Mars finishes the season October 19 at Spencer.
