Missing Remsen man found dead

Tuesday, October 6, 2009
Answers are still being sought in the death of a 29-year-old Remsen man who was found dead at noon Monday in a pickup truck partially submerged in the Little Sioux River, just north of Kingsley.

Michael David Ahlers, of rural Remsen, was declared dead on the scene, according to the Plymouth County Sheriff's report.

The cause is not yet determined, Sheriff Mike Van Otterloo said.

"He lost control and entered the ditch," Van Otterloo said. "We don't know why."

While the pickup was partially submerged, Ahlers was not underwater, the sheriff added.

On Sunday, Ahlers' family notified law enforcement that Ahlers had not been heard from or seen since the early morning hours of Saturday, Oct. 3.

The scene of the accident was on Highway 140 between 300th Street and 310th Street.

Ahlers' body was transported to Floyd Valley Hospital in Le Mars, where Dr. Sheila Holcomb, the Plymouth County medical examiner, conducted her examination.

"The investigation is ongoing; foul play is not a factor in this accident," Van Otterloo said in the press release.

The Kingsley Fire Department and Ambulance assisted the sheriff's office.
