School board election is Tuesday

Friday, September 4, 2009
Voters in Plymouth County school districts will go to the voting booth Tuesday to elect school board members, and in the case of Hinton Community School District, decide on a $5.9 million bond issue for the construction of a new elementary school.

The polls at the Hinton Community Center will open at 7 a.m. and close at 8 p.m. due to the bond issue on the ballot and the number of voters going to one voting location.

At Hinton, voters will also elect two candidates for director-at-large seats. Candidates are incumbent Robert Held, Brett Stanley and John W. Reintzel.

Polls for voters in the Le Mars Community School District, Akron-Westfield School District, Remsen-Union School District and Kingsley-Pierson School District will be open from noon to 8 p.m.

Le Mars Community Schools residents will elect three directors, with no races. Candidates are:

District 1, Scott Kommes, of Le Mars, candidate for the seat currently held by Leon Scott, who is not seeking re-election.

Districts 2 Cris Collins, Le Mars, incumbent;

District 4 Brenda Phelan, Le Mars, incumbent.

Polling places for Le Mars Community School District voters are:

Precinct 1 - Le Mars Public Library, for district residents living in Elgin, America, Marion and Fredonia Townships and the Town of Struble.

Precinct 2 - Craig City Hall, for district residents living in Grant and Preston Townships and the Town of Craig.

Precinct 3 - Brunsville Legion Club, for district residents living in Washington and Johnson Townships and the Town of Brunsville.

Precinct 4 - Merrill Civic Center, for residents living in Liberty, Plymouth, Stanton and Lincoln Townships and the town of Merrill.

Precinct 5 - Le Mars Convention Center (lower level) for residents living in the corporate limits of the city of Le Mars.

At Akron, Phil Parks, District 2, and Josh Martinsen, District 3, are running for re-election. There are no candidates for the District 1 seat held by Kevin DeRocher. The District 5 seat, currently held by appointment by Janet Willer, needs to be filled for two years. There are no candidates for that seat.

There are two polling places for the A-W district. One is at the Akron Library for all Akron city residents and district residents living in Portland and Preston Townships. District residents who live in Westfield, Sioux, Liberty, Johnson, Perry and Hancock Townships and the town of Westfield will vote at the Westfield Community Center.

In the Remsen-Union School District, there is a race for Director District 1 between incumbent Travis J. Tentinger and Michael E. Sparr. Cheri Nitzschke is running for the Director District 3 seat, currently held by Rich VanDam. There is no candidate for the District 5 seat currently held by Mark Wurth.

Voters in the R-U district will cast their ballots at the Remsen Public Library.

Kingsley-Pierson voters will vote for two incumbents, Shari Seuntjens of District 1 and Scott Bohle of District 3. K-P district residents will cast their vote at the Kingsley Community Center. This is a new location for some residents of the district.

Also on the ballot is a district director seat for the Western Iowa Tech Community College (Merged Area XII) in the counties of Cherokee, Ida, Monona, Plymouth and Woodbury. Neal Adler is the candidate on the ballot.

All elections will be on a paper ballot, except for Hinton, which will use voting machines.

VOTE NO to wasteful spending on Hinton's $5.9 million dollar bond issue on Tuesday.

Higher Taxes + Weak Economy = Bad for our community.
