Herman Kempema, 93, of Rock Valley, died Monday, Aug. 31, 2009, at Whispering Heights.
Herman Kempema was born Nov. 19, 1915, at Rock Valley, son of Riemer and Hermina (Vedders) Kempema. Herman married Henrietta Van Maanen April 28, 1943, on the family farm.
He served in the U.S. Army during World War II. After the war, Herman and Henrietta lived in Rock Valley where he worked with his brother Clarence in the Kempema Hatchery and Feed Store and later Dykstra Produce. Herman later was custodian and bus driver at Rock Valley Christian Grade School until retiring in 1984.
Herman enjoyed playing piano, organ, accordion, guitar, and the harmonica. He also enjoyed playing pool with his friends at the Senior Citizen's Club and most important, spending time with family.
He is survived by his wife, Henrietta; children: Harlyn (Diane) Kempema of Rock Valley, Glenda (Fred) Vollink of Le Mars, Wally (Jolaine) Kempema of Sioux Falls, S.D., Arnold Kempema of Rock Valley, Marvin (Lola) Kempema of Woodstock, Ga., and Curtis (Darlene) Kempema of Ventura, Calif.; 12 grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren.
Herman was preceded in death by a grandson, Barry Vollink; brothers: Henry, Charlie, Ernest, Clarence and John Kempema; sisters: Jennie Kooistra, Fannie Kooistra, Freda Groeneweg, and Jeanette Van Maanen.
Funeral service will be 10:30 a.m. Friday at First Christian Reformed Church, Rock Valley. Burial at Valley View Cemetery. The Rev. Rich Kooistra will be officiating. Visitation will be Thursday with the family present 6:30 to 8 p.m. at Porter Funeral Home, Rock Valley.
