Minnie Borchers

Minnie Borchers, 90, of Akron, died Sunday, July 26, 2009, in the Cottage Center at the Good Samaritan Society in Le Mars.

Minnie Louise Borchers was born Feb. 22, 1919, in Akron, the daughter of John and Louise (Milbrodt) Koch. She was baptized and confirmed into the Christian faith. She attended country school in Preston Township, rural Akron.

She was united in marriage to Elmer Borchers Nov. 18, 1937, at St. John Evangelical Lutheran Church. Together they were the parents of five children: Jack, Pat, Bob, Alan, and Mark.

Minnie was a homemaker for her family. She and Elmer farmed in Preston Township for many years. In the early 1980s, they moved to Akron and built a new home near the school. They made their home there for more than 27 years. Minnie and Elmer then moved to assisted living in Hawarden. Elmer died May 15, 2005. Minnie continued to live in the nursing home in Hawarden until moving to Brentwood in Le Mars.

Minnie was a member of St. John Evangelical Lutheran Church, rural Akron, where she served in the ladies aide for many years.

She and Elmer traveled to many destinations throughout the years together, including trips to Minnesota, Atlanta, Kansas City, California, Black Hills, and two trips to Germany.

She liked gardening, ceramics, dancing, and shopping. She also enjoyed attending all of her family's school and athletic events. She loved her children and was a wonderful grandmother. Minnie's door was always open to friends and family and she always had something to eat for everyone. Her grandchildren and children's friends will always remember her for her outstanding pancakes and apples pies. Minnie dedicated her life to her family and helping others. She will be greatly missed by all who knew her.

Survivors include her five children: Jack Borchers and his wife Kay of Hawarden, Pat Smith of Kansas City, Mo., Bob Borchers and his wife Karin of Hawarden, Alan Borchers and his wife Linda of Atlanta, Ga., and Mark Borchers and his wife Sandy of Akron; 17 grandchildren; 26 great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandson; a sister, Lorena Gabel of Le Mars; a brother, Hank Koch and his wife Lee of Virginia Beach, Va,; and a sister-in-law: Marilyn Koch of Waverly; and several nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Elmer; four brothers, August, Bill, Lowell, and one in infancy; and three sisters, Delia Wilken, Evelyn Leaf, and Lillian Schroeder.

Funeral services will be 10:30 a.m. Thursday at St. John Evangelical Lutheran Church, Preston Township, rural Akron, Iowa. Reverend Sarah Nye will officiate. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. Visitation will be after 4 p.m. today (Wednesday), with the family present after 6 p.m., and a prayer service at 7 p.m., all at Carlsen Funeral Home - Schroeder Chapel in Akron. Visitation will resume one hour prior to the service Thursday at the church.

Casketbearers will be Stacey Borchers, Brandy Borchers, Justin Borchers, Jeff Petersen, Steve Rehder, Joe Crosgrove, and Kirt Clayberg. Honorary casketbearers will be Michael Borchers, Darrin Finley, Stacy St. John, Zac Traver, and Carlos Nieves.

The family wishes to express their gratitude for the loving care she received from Hospice of Siouxland and the Good Samaritan Society staff.
