Big Sioux River Cleanup scheduled for this weekend

Tuesday, July 14, 2009
The Plymouth County conservation department will be holding the Third Annual Big Sioux River Cleanup July 18.

The cleanup will start at the Big Sioux River Park north of Akron. Volunteers will then float, in canoes, down the river and end at a spot near Akron.

"We are picking up any trash we see floating in the river or stuck in a log jam," said Victoria Shamblen, a naturalist for the Plymouth County conservation department.

The cleanup will begin at 9:00 a.m. and will end when the volunteers reach the end site. Canoes will be used for the float, and volunteers are also invited to bring flat bottom boats to use for floating.

The Big Sioux River Cleanup is open to anyone that is interested in helping out the conservation board. Volunteers simply need to call Shamblen at the Plymouth County conservation department office at 712-947-4270.
