"We never gave up and we battled back," A-W coach Gordy Johnson said. "I was real happy with the boys staying in the game."
Trailing 7-0 with hard-throwing Eagles pitcher Will Hanson on the mound, the Westerners bats came to life.
Ben Brown walked, Connor Heyl reached on an error, before Mitch Hedlund, Michael Harris and Alex Frankl hit consecutive singles. Michael Oetken doubled, Tyler Johnson singled and one out later, Cale Banks and Brown walked to load the bases.
But MMC reliever Jerad Letsche retired the next hitter to end the contest and give the Eagles their 18th win of the season.
"The boys were happy with the way they battled, but disappointed that they couldn't get one more hit," Gordy Johnson said.
Brown took the loss on the mound as he thew six innings of nine-hit baseball. He struck out five and walked a pair.
Gordy Johnson was impressed with Hanson's stuff.
"He has a good fastball and he throws his curveball for a strike," he said. "(MMC ace Jacob) Lehnhoff is really tough, but I think Hanson is also one of the best pitchers in the conference."
"We've seen them both and they're both pretty tough."
Frankl and Harris each had two hits to pace the Westerners (13-8, 9-5), who travel to Inwood on Thursday to take on West Lyon. A-W returns to WEC action at home on Friday as they look to exact revenge on Hinton - 1-0 winners the first time around.
