SB-L completes sweep of A-W

Wednesday, July 1, 2009
The Sergeant Bluff-Luton baseball team just seems to have the Akron-Westfield's number.

The Warriors jumped out to an early lead, coughed it up, then finally reclaimed it to hand the Westerners a 9-6 War Eagle Conference defeat on Monday in Akron.

The win completes a season sweep for SB-L, which handed A-W its first loss of the season by a 15-0 margin on June 8.

Tyler Johnson pitched six innings and took the loss for A-W. He struck out five and walked four.

The Warriors jumped right on the board with three runs in the first inning and two in the second inning for a 5-0 lead.

"They hit the tar out of (the ball) the first two innings," A-W coach Gordy Johnson said. "Then he settled down and pitched real well until the sixth and then he ran into trouble."

The Westerners chipped away with single runs in the second and third innings. Michael Harris drove in Cale Banks with an RBI single in the second and Ben Brown drove in Derek Appley with an RBI single in the third.

A-W tied the game with three runs in the fourth as Johnson's two-run double plated Harris and Alex Frankl. Appley later scored on a passed ball to knot the game at 5-5.

A-W took a brief 6-5 lead in the fifth when Appley's RBI double scored Harris.

The Warriors came back with two runs in the sixth and one in the seventh to give the game its final outcome.

"The boys were pretty down about (the loss)," Gordy Johnson said. "They have to keep their heads up because we have a big one with Marcus (on Wednesday)."

Harris and Frankl each finished with three hits and Appley had two for A-W (13-7, 8-4).
