Superintendent Dr. Todd Wendt informed the board at its June 8 meeting that the Iowa High School Athletic Association (IHSAA) had sanctioned boys bowling as a sport for the 2009-10 school year.
He said the boys club team currently competing under the Le Mars Community name had requested the school sanction the sport.
At that meeting, Wendt said girls' bowling coach Deb Swift indicated she was willing to serve as both the girls and boys' bowling coach for the 2009-10 school year at her current $2,152 salary.
Monday night, Wendt responded to questions raised regarding participation numbers and scheduling issues.
"Last year there were 14 participants on the girls' team and the boys' club team had 23 participants," Wendt said.
Currently transportation for the girls' bowling team to and from contests consists of using a sports utility vehicle. Generally the boys and girls competitions occur at the same location, Wendt told the board.
Transportation costs would increase slightly as it would be necessary to take a school bus or multiple vehicles if transporting the boys' team became the district's financial responsibility.
"Primarily we play the Sioux City schools, with the exception of Battle Creek-Ida Grove where we also play a home and away," Wendt said in response to scheduling questions previously raised by the board.
Wendt indicated LCS activities director Floyd Athay had received information that the Sioux City School District intends to sanction boys' bowling and they will have girls' bowling as well.
"So scheduling should be very similar to what we've had in the past," Wendt said.
Monday night he cautioned the board that the coach salary will likely be a discussion item during the 2010-11 master contract negotiation process.
He indicated with boys' bowling now sanctioned by IHSAA, the addition of boys' bowling maintains the district's commitment to gender equity in activity opportunities.
"This provides equity in offering between boys and girls in extracurricular activities," Wendt said.
"Finally, I know that if kids are involved in a school activity, they have a stronger chance of being successful in school," Wendt said.
Board members approved sanctioning boys' bowling on a unanimous vote.
