Oyens to celebrate centennial this weekend

Wednesday, June 3, 2009
Oyens will kick off a weekend full of activities Friday to celebrate its 100th anniversary.

The fun begins at 5:30 p.m. with the Tri-State Car Cruisers Show. The Pork Producers will also be grilling pork burgers and brats that night, while Oyens Fire Department will be in charge of the beer garden.

Saturday events include the tractor show, quilt show and memorabilia exhibit, and the beer garden. Centennial souvenirs will be sold at St. Catherine's School.

The "Gobble Stop" Turkey Shop will also be selling food throughout the celebration.

At 10 a.m. Saturday a kiddie parade will kick off inviting area children to dress in costumes to parade down Catholic Street. Prizes will be given for first, second and third places.

Following the kiddie parade, at noon the centennial parade will march through the town, with participants dressed in vintage attire.

Children's games will trail the parade, as well as carvings done by B & R chainsaw sculptor Blair Smith, which will be auctioned off later in the evening.

After a 5:30 p.m. church service Saturday at St. Catherine's Church, about 40 contestants will be judged in the town beard contest, followed by the costume contest.

Saturday evening will conclude with a street dance featuring the sounds of the "Great Time Oldies Band" from 8 p.m. to midnight.

The final event of the centennial celebration will be at 1 p.m. Sunday with the Oyens firefighters' water fight.
