Lady Jays race to top team finish at Rebel Relays

Monday, May 11, 2009
Not even the cold wind could stop the Lady Jays as the Gehlen Catholic girls raced to a first-place team finish at Friday's Rebel Relays hosted by Westwood in Sloan.

"It was extremely windy down there and cold," Gehlen coach Betty Loutsch said. "It was hard running in that wind, but otherwise I think it was a good night."

Kayla Hatting garnered the lone individual gold as she was first in the 100 hurdles in 16.16.

The senior helped her squad to its other top finishes as she joined Kayla Holtgrewe, Steph Rohe and Nicole Ryan to clock a first-place 1:09.93 in the shuttle hurdle relay.

Hatting, Ryan and Rohe added Erica Janning to run a first-place 4:32.31 in the 4x400.

Hatting was second in the 400 hurdles (1:11.07) while Rohe was third in 1:13.87. Holtgrewe was third in the 100 hurdles in a time of 17.76 seconds.

Janning was second in the 800 in 2:36.34 and Kaitlyn Roberts ran the 100-meter dash in 13.97 seconds to place second.

MacKenzie Kellen leapt 14-10 1/2 to earn a second-place finish in the long jump while Rachel Tilley's spin of 102-7 1/2 was good for second as well.

Rachel Koopman was third in the 3000, clocking a time of 13:17.59.

Molly Wankum ran the 1500 in 5:43.16 to place third.

The lone gold medal on the boys side came in the 4x400 relay.

Trevor Bouma, Jordan Freking, Shaun Ryan and Taylor Wurth teamed up to clock a first-place 3:46 in the race as they helped the Jays to a fourth-place team finish.

Wurth added a silver in the 400 (55.4) while Freking was second in the 3200 (10:57).

Jordan Langel was third in the 110 high hurdles with a time of 18.1 seconds.

The 4x200 relay team of Adam Nemmers, Jordan Sitzmann, Shaun Ryan and Taylor Waskow was second in 1:37 while Matt Mayer, Matt Klein, Fort Massay and Zach Wurth clocked a fourth-place 9:16 in the 4x800 relay.

Drew Kellen cleared 5-8 to place third in the high jump.
