Man charged with assaulting woman with putty knife

Monday, May 11, 2009
A Kingsley man was arrested Friday morning at the Wells' Dairy North Ice Cream Plant in Le Mars after he allegedly assaulted a female employee by placing a putty knife against her throat, according to the Le Mars Police.

Jeston Abon, 38, also an employee at the plant, was arrested at about 7:39 a.m. after allegedly assaulting both that female and a male employee who came to the aid of the female, according to the police report.

The only injury noted was a red mark on the female victim's throat.

The assault followed a "workplace situation," according to a police spokeswoman.

After an investigation, Abon was booked into the Plymouth County Jail on two counts of assault with the intent to inflict serious injury, both aggravated misdemeanors.

Le Mars Police were aided by the Plymouth County Sheriff's Office and Wells' Security.

Being familiar with Wells i would not be surprised if all three did not get fired.

I guess we need to start teaching that behavior is un-acceptable in Kindergarten!

When these people immigrate to our country, they HAVE to realize that they will have to live according to how things work in our country and according to our culture. So even though this individual doesn't take orders from a woman in the country he came from, in the United States, that is quite common anymore. Deal with how things are in our culture, or move back to where you came from!

What is the point of the Comments section if you are going to delete half of the submissions. Being ironic in no way violates or goes against your guidelines of: "obscenity in your comments, and to keep discussions civil, don't say anything in a way your grandmother would be ashamed to read."

TMAC, many people have asked why the comments are deleted, even though they do not violate any of the terms or conditions. i have written to the editor and webmaster but got a 'blanket statement' answer but would not address the specifics. Pretty much hit/miss situation as far as comments...

Whiners, not sure of any nationalities noted in this article. You seem to either know more than the article provides, or the individuals. I don't think having anyone move back where they came from will correct anything, but allow future abuses in a different place. That would be a sad thing, wouldn't it?

That would be a sad thing, wouldn't it?

NO! It is ridding the town I live in of someone who is unwilling to adapt to our culture.

whiners, do you live in seclussion where what happens outside of LeMars doesn't pertain to you? To think you can 'send someone off' to some other place and get rid of the problem is dreaming that it goes away. The problem remains the same. We all deserve to work in a non threatening, not hostile environment no matter where we are. We have a global marketplace and trade, hopefully without products made from violent workplaces or deprived (slave) workforce. Next time you are in a store, think of the products and how they were made, and mostly by whom.

I usually think more about how much the items I'm buying cost. This is the United States - they come here, they should act like they belong here!

I don't think Whiners would be happy about anything- ever.

Mature respect and understanding of others is part of cultural awareness awakening. This awareness builds community bonds and strength to grow as a society. It is disheartening to see that some see prices as the most important factor when determining what to buy; Or to hear people say that some members of our community should improve "our community" by leaving. To have a superiority attitude over others demonstrates lack of understanding. One of the things we learned from WWII is that grouping people by race or belief is a way of deteriorating societal bonds. There isn't a superior race or belief, just superior people in our lives. There is sooooo much more to life than consumerism. The biggest challenge we face everyday is how we can successfully live in peace with one another while building stronger relationships.

The individual charged with assault came from Somalia, a primarily Sunni Muslim country. You of all people should know what has been going on in that country. They have lived with violence, they feel that is the only way to resolve a conflict. Are you saying his belief is correct, that no woman should tell a man what to do? If so, that is the REAL sad thing! If I were to move to another country, I would expect to have to adapt to their cultural beliefs and practices. They should do the same!

As the mid eastern countries evolve, these 'traditions' of suppression continue to dissolve. It is a slow process of education and understanding. What we have here is a chance to educate and correct. I believe in equal opportunities for everyone.

I agree that people should not come to this country EXPECTING that WE will adapt to their culture. THEY have made a decision to come here. They need to realize that if they want to be part of OUR country and lives, they need to learn how things are done here. The thought that we have to give everything that our country stands for up so that they will not feel "different" is ridiculous. I grew up in the military, when we went to a foreign country, we were EXPECTED to obey that country's laws and not EXPECT our views/ideals to run how that country and people lived. Yet we HAVE TO allow this to occur here??? When someone CHOOSES to come to this country, they need to try to assimilate into the culture that is here. I do NOT mean that they have to give up their beliefs, that is what freedom is about, but they DO NOT have the right to DEMAND that we change ours either. We have our rules for our country too. If you are going to be here, learn what they are and follow them. Learn to adapt to the situation you are now in...maybe in your country you didn't have to take orders from women, but in this country you may have to. Grow up, assimilate, and deal with it. Things change, and YOU CHOSE to come here.

mamatink, I couldn't agree with you more.....

mamatink, I agree with your comment. I do think that we must all keep an open mind to progressions of society and maturizations as citizens. Everyone has a bit of their cultural background traditions, let's hope we can drop the 'bad' ones and adopt the 'good' ones no matter where in the world we live. Remember, we (in America) as a society are evolving too. Equal rights, Womens rights, Equal Opportunity, Environmental conciousness, etc are all things that have developed through activism and a slow muturing of understanding. Hatred and oppression takes generations to change. If it is against the law, then the law will preside over as long as society backs the law. When society sees the law as counter to moral judgement, it will be altered or repealed. Part of the beauty of our system.

On the flip side, 'Americans' have taken away from the cultures by 'sterilization' to what a few believed to be the 'right way' to live. Be careful of stating that 'newcomers' must adapt. "Forefathers" didn't when they invaded and stole this land from the people who already were living here. Being partially native, it is offensive. Yet I know what you mean and I still agree with you. Where we are is where we are, hopefully we can grow to a better society of peace.

I think our country has come a long way, it has a long way to go. Every year it gets a little closer to peace and harmony. I do believe that violence is NEVER a good solution to any problem.

Many cultures, women are the head of household and men take direction from them.

Reminds me of the man of the house saying, I'm in charge and I'll do exactly what she told me to do.

;-)

There should be a "5 day waiting period" before ANYONE can buy a putty knife.

No felons should be able to buy one either!

Can you believe just ANYBODY can walk into a Hardware Store and buy a Putty Knife?

(Just kidding Comrade Whiners...I know you were getting all Giddy thinking you and I agreed on something.)
