Relay for Life luminarias available

Monday, May 11, 2009
The 2009 Plymouth County Relay For Life will once again feature a luminaria ceremony at Jim Lorenzen Field in Le Mars on June 5.

The Relay For Life is an American Cancer Society event which raises money for research and education about cancer.

The ceremony, from 10 to 11 p.m., is a time to honor and remember loved ones who have battled cancer.

White paper bags with candles will line the track at the Le Mars athletic field, lovingly decorated with memories of loved ones by family and friends. During the ceremony, the names of those honored and remembered will be read.

The luminaria bags are now available at several businesses in Le Mars and from Relay For Life team members.

Luminaria bags are available for a donation of $7 a bag and may be purchased at the following locations in Le Mars: Craft Den, N.W. Iowa Credit Union, american Bank, Medical Associates, Floyd Valley Hospital and Pizza Ranch, and in Remsen at Mrs. B's Convenience Store.

Decorated luminaria bags should be returned to the place of purchase no later than Tuesday June 2.

Anyone wishing to keep their bag should pick them up after the luminaria ceremony at the track June 5. Luminarias will also be available from 5 to 8 p.m. at the Relay event.

Team campsite setup will begin at noon Friday, June 5, with the concession stand also opening at that time. Le Mars DJ Tom Mullally will be providing music throughout the afternoon and evening.

Opening ceremonies for the 2009 Plymouth County Relay For Life will be at 6 p.m. Friday with the Survivor Lap, Caregiver Lap and sponsor recognition at 6:30 p.m.

The Kids Corner activity area will open at 5 p.m., with a freewill donation accepted.

Entertainment and fun laps will continue from 7 to 10 p.m.

Activities at the track will end at midnight, with the event continuing throughout the night as a candlelight vigil in honor/in memory of Plymouth County cancer survivors.

I would support the ACS if they didn't annually give $1000s to abortion clinics. Both Planned Parenthood of Iowa and the American Cancer Society issue press releases celebrating their partnership. How can people who work to perserve life join people who destroy life? Be a voice and share your displeasure with the ACS.
