State offers property tax credit, rent reimbursement for some

Some Iowa residents may be eligible for state credit on property tax or rent reimbursement.

To be eligible, Iowa residents who own their homes must be 65 years or older by December 31, 2008 (or totally disabled and 18 years of age or older by December 31, 2008), and have a total household income under $20,031 for the year of 2008.

Applicants may sign up any time from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. in Le Mars at the treasurer's office in the Plymouth County Courthouse until June 1.

Linda Dobson, Plymouth County treasurer, will be at the following towns to sign up applicants who qualify for a state credit on their house taxes, mobile homes, or rent reimbursements.

Bring your 2008 income tax return, social security statement of earnings, and any other income amount that you received in 2008 to one of the following locations:

* May 4 - Hinton Community Building, 9:30-11:30 a.m.

* May 4 - Merrill Civic Center, 1-2 p.m.

* May 5 - Remsen Library, 9-11 a.m.

* May 6 - Kingsley City Hall, 9-11 a.m.

* May 7 - Akron Library Community Room, 9:30-11:30 a.m.

* May 7 - Westfield City Hall, 1-2 p.m.
