Math. That's what earned a team of five sixth graders from Gehlen Catholic School a trip to Fort Dodge this May.

Gehlen's sixth grade math team earned first place at the Area Education Agency (AEA) Math Competition in Sioux City Tuesday, advancing to the state contest in Fort Dodge May 1.

The group of students, coached by sixth grade math teacher Kathy Neary, scored high on individual and team math tests to win the top spot out of 35 teams.

"It's intense math," Neary said. "It's ratios, patterns, statistics."

The math team practices together after school and occasionally during math class time, Neary said.

At Tuesday's competition, students also tested for individual rank out of 140 competitors.

Nathan Klein tied for third place individually, Michaela Bretey took sixth place, Trisha Langel took eighth place and Jonathan Ludwig took 20th place, all earning medals. Allison Perera, the team's alternate, joined the team for the team test and helped them score well.
