These services are intended to provide additional access at a lower cost for outpatient care for minor illnesses and injuries that might be presented to the emergency department, especially after typical business hours, said Mike Donlin, FVH administrator.
The new urgent care services will not be performed out of a new clinic, but through the existing emergency department, Donlin said.
"The people that think they might have to make a trip down to Sioux City for urgent care can now try here," Donlin said. "It will be a savings for people."
That savings will come at a time when many insurance companies charge less for urgent care than emergency room services, he said.
According to a press release the urgent care services will be available to patients who request them.
Donlin said the idea for the addition of the urgent care services started out as a request from a local business seeking to provide for its employees' needs.
"I jumped at the chance to adapt our services," Donlin said. "We quickly realized if we could do it to serve that request, we could do it for the whole community."
Urgent care service hours are 1 p.m. to 10 p.m. Monday through Friday, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday and noon to 5 p.m. Sunday.
