Stimulus package could help pay for local law enforcement

Tuesday, March 10, 2009
The Le Mars Police Department and the Plymouth County Sheriff's Office could be eligible receive a total of more than $30,000 in economic stimulus dollars, according to a release from U.S. Sen. Tom Harkin's office last week.

The Le Mars Police Department is set to receive $20,390 and the Plymouth County Sheriff's Office is set to receive $11,069.

But neither agency has actually received the money yet.

Sheriff Mike VanOtterloo said to receive any dollars, the two agencies have to apply and qualify according to the grant specifications.

"It's not like we have gotten the money, but we are looking into it," VanOtterloo said.

Police Chief Stu Dekkenga said he wanted to find out first if the grant requires a cash match before deciding whether to apply.

The purposes this grant money can be used for are pretty broad, he added.

According to the release, $18.7 million from the Economic Recovery Package has been shifted to Iowa from the U.S. Department of Justice's Justice Assistance Grant (JAG) Program.

JAG dollars can be used for technical assistance, training, personnel, equipment, supplies, contractual support, and information systems for criminal justice.

The program is designed to boost law enforcement programs; prosecution and court programs; prevention and education programs; corrections and community corrections programs; drug treatment programs; and planning, evaluation, and technology improvement programs, the release stated.
