World Day of Prayer service set for Friday

Thursday, March 5, 2009
Joining in prayer with others around the globe, a World Day of Prayer service is planned for 1:30 p.m. Friday at the United Methodist Church of Le Mars.

All are invited to participate and listen to guest speaker Tony Heisterkamp's presentation on his mission work in Peru.

The World Day of Prayer event is hosted by Church Women United and is part of a worldwide movement of Christians who come together to observe a common day of prayer every year.

Since the 19th century, Christian women in the United States and Canada have initiated cooperative activities in many areas of concern for women and children, the role of prayer in mission work and the promotion of world peace through involvement in mission work worldwide.

The first organized day of prayer held nationally was in Canada Jan. 9, 1920. In the United States, the first organized day of prayer held nationally was Feb. 20, 1920.

Each year, a different country serves as the writer of the World Day of Prayer worship service. This year's service is by the women of Papua New Guinea.

The United Methodist Church of Le Mars is at 901 Third Ave. S.E.
