Wells' Dairy expands nationwide voluntary recall due to possible health risk

In response to the ongoing investigations of Peanut Corporation of America (PCA) and its Texas facility, Wells' Dairy, Inc., is expanding its recall and response to include a nationwide recall of select Blue Bunny, Great Value, Hy-Vee, Sysco, Fastco, Shurfresh, and Country Rich ice cream products because they may contain peanuts that have the potential to be contaminated with Salmonella.

PCA is no longer a supplier of any product for Wells' Dairy.

The expanded product recall includes Select Products with "best used by" dates prior to 2/4/2010 (all lot numbers).

The products were sold at retail and foodservice outlets nationwide.

Consumers who have purchased the recalled products should return them to the store where they were purchased for a full refund. Anyone requiring more information should contact Wells' Dairy consumer affairs at 1-800-331-0830.

Salmonella is an organism which can cause serious and sometimes fatal infections in young children, frail or elderly people, and others with weakened immune systems. Healthy persons infected with Salmonella often experience fever, diarrhea (which may be bloody), nausea, vomiting and abdominal pain. In rare circumstances, infection with Salmonella can result in the organism getting into the bloodstream and producing more severe illnesses such as arterial infections (i.e., infected aneurysms), endocarditis and arthritis. Again this supplier would have never been approved as a Wells Dairy Supplier when Fay Wells was at the helm, as the required supplier plant audit would have exposed the plants uncleanliness and thus the Wells QC department would have rejected PCA as a supplier. I have not heard of any other major ice cream manufacturers recalling any peanut based products.

I have no insight to Wells' Quality Control...However, I think they are doing the right thing at their own expense. As for other ice cream manufaturers recalling items....there are a few on this list @ this link.

Yes their are many grocery chains with their private labels listed and many small manufacturers but I didn't see the large quality manufactures on the list like Ben&Jerrys, Unileaver, Dreyers, Edys, Haagen Dasz, Blue Bell etc. I thought Wells wanted to be a top 3 Brand but re-calls like this only set you back regardless of who is at fault. It is your Brand name that is getting the black eye.
