Panthers take fifth at own invite

The Kingsley-Pierson wrestling team placed fifth at its own 10-team invitational with 135 points on Saturday at Kingsley-Pierson High School.

Woodbury Central, winners of the team title with 178 points, had three individual champions.

Marcus-Meriden-Cleghorn was second with 169 points and boasted four individual champions.

Mike Weaver was the lone champion for K-P. The senior claimed the heavyweight championship by pinning Lawton-Bronson's Ryan Miller in 2:22.

Weaver's younger brother Tanner took second place at 145 pounds. MMC's Jacob Pearson pinned the K-P sophomore in 4:30 in the title match.

Fellow sophomore Cole Simons was pinned by Lawton-Bronson's Clayton King in the 189-pound title match to finish second.

At 125 pounds, senior Caleb Bush won a 10-6 decision over Westwood's Tom Baker to claim third place.

Matt Steffen defeated Cherokee's Zac Anderson 17-10 to win third place at 135 pounds.

Senior Sean Bainbridge won a 9-3 decision over Western Christian's Kyle Westra to take third place at 152 pounds.

Junior Ross McNaughton pinned Western Christian's Ross Hoksbergen in 2:33 to place third at 171 pounds.

Freshman Joe Turner pinned Westwood's Zack Goodvin in 31 seconds to place fifth at 112 pounds and sophomore Zach Pratt pinned Western Christian's Sam Van Ginkel in 3:02 to place fifth at 160 pounds.

The Panthers return to action Tuesday as they host West Monona, West Harrison and Laurens-Marathon in make-up action from a December 18 postponement.
