Earl W. (Ed) Draayer, 52, of Anchorage, Alaska, died Dec. 30, 2008, at Providence Alaska Medical Center, from complications after a short and courageous battle with cancer.
Ed was born July 1, 1956, in Sioux Center, the son of John G. and Gertrude Draayer. He graduated from Western Christian High School in Hull, in 1974. He joined the U.S. Navy in October 1975 and served on the USS Enterprise until October 1979. In the summer of 1983, he went to Alaska with his brother Lyle. They both worked at V.F. Grace Inc. Shortly afterward, he began working on the North Slope. For the last 15 years he worked on the slope as a warehouseman for NANA Management Services.
Ed loved working on his garden in the summer, snowmachining during the winter months, and enjoyed all that Alaska offers. He enjoyed listening to his vast music collection, but most especially he cherished spending time with his wide circle of friends and his brother Lyle's family.
He is survived by his parents, John and Gertrude (Dibbett) Draayer of Rock Valley; three brothers, Darwin and his wife Joyce Draayer of Remsen, Conrad Draayer of Boulder, Colo., and Lyle and his wife Emily Draayer and their daughter, Amber Draayer, all of Anchorage, Alaska; and seven step-nieces and nephews; Jacki Trujillo, Jamie Spangler and John, Joe, Jesse, Jerermy and Julie Galles.
A memorial service will be held at 10:30 a.m. Friday, Jan. 16, 2009, at Calvin Christian Reform Church in Rock Valley.
In lieu of flowers memorials can be sent to Christian education.
