Investigators shut down an active meth lab on an abandoned farm site near Hinton and arrested the suspected meth cook last Thursday.

Marlo Arthur Petersen, 34, of Onawa, was discovered upstairs in the house on the property at 30894 Kestrel Avenue -- the same house where Plymouth County Sheriff Deputies found a clandestine methamphetamine lab, according to a report from the sheriff's office.

Petersen was arrested and charged with six felonies after an investigation.

Deputies arrived at the farm site at about 1:50 p.m. on Thursday, Jan. 8, after receiving a complaint about suspicious activity there.

The strong smell of chemicals hung in the air. As the deputies searched, they discovered the lab and called in officers from the Le Mars Police Department, Iowa State Patrol, Tri-State Drug Task Force and Hinton Fire Department to assist.

The officers then made the active meth lab safe.

Petersen was charged with manufacturing methamphetamine, more than 5 grams, a class B felony, and five class D felonies for possessing five drug precursors: ether, acid, pseudoephedrine, lithium and anhydrous ammonia.

The deputies contacted the Onawa Police Department and a officers conducted a search of Petersen's home in Onawa.

Evidence was uncovered there and more charges are possible, the report stated.

The case remains under investigation.

Petersen remains in custody at the Plymouth County Jail on a $10,000 cash only bond.

If convicted of the class B felony, Petersen could face up to 25 years in prison. The class D felonies could each mean five years in prison.

"Prohibition will work great injury to the cause of temperance. It is a species of intemperance within itself, for it goes beyond the bounds of reason in that it attempts to control a man's appetite by legislation, and makes a crime out of things that are not crimes. A Prohibition law strikes a blow at the very principles upon which our government was founded."

Throw the book at him and make him the example. The midwest is too good a place to have people like him doing what he does.
