Troy Haakenson, 36, of rural Le Mars, died Thursday, Dec. 11, 2008 from an automobile accident in rural Cherokee County, Iowa.

Troy Ellis Haakenson was born Sept. 21, 1972, at Montevideo, Minn., the son of Steve and Kathy (Sumner) Haakenson. Troy was raised near Dawson, Minn., and later moved with his family to Sergeant Bluff, Iowa. He graduated from Sergeant Bluff-Luton High School in 1991. In 1994, he graduated from Western Iowa Tech as an electrician. He worked for Chesterman Company in Sioux City as an electrician from 1994 until 1999. In 1999 Troy went to work for Wells' Dairy Inc. until accepting a position with Nikkel & Associates in Le Mars as a journeyman electrician where he has worked on many large scale building projects throughout northwest Iowa.

Troy was united in marriage to Melisa Amundson on April 18, 1997 at Elk Point, S.D. Together they are the proud parents of their children, Steven age 11 and Kristina age 5.

As a family, they enjoyed camping at Lake Cochrane, near Gary, S.D., during the summers. Troy has loved animals since childhood and enjoyed having animals on their acreage near Seney. One of his greatest joys was taking pride in the acreage where the family lived. He enjoyed hunting and going fishing when time allowed.

With his mechanical skills, Troy enjoyed "tinkering" with older vehicles. He helped his friend and neighbor, Albert Schulz on the farm whenever needed. Troy was a very hard worker and giving person. He was always willing to help others. Most recently he had wired the Assembly of God Church when they moved to their new church.

Survivors include his wife and children, Melisa, Steven, and Kristina all of rural Le Mars; his parents, Steve and Kathy Haakenson of Eagle Grove; two sisters and brothers-in-law, Lisa and Matt Anderson and their son Colton of St. Joseph, Mo., and Laura and Aaron Provin and their children Nichole, MaKayla, and Tharon of Cameron, Mo.; his mother-in-law and father-in-law, John and Patsy Amundson of Sloan; brother-in-law, Jason Amundson and his special friend Amanda Wolff of Sloan; grandparents: Floyd Haakenson of Dawson, Minn., Glenn and Ardella Sumner of Boyd, Minn., and Darline Thompson of Armour, S.D.; very special friends, Albert and Dorothy Schulz of Le Mars; and many other aunts, uncles, cousins and friends.
