Supervisors approve numbers for Hinton school election

Wednesday, December 10, 2008
After the official count was confirmed, there were no changes in numbers for the Hinton Community School Districts Dec. 2 special election.

The Plymouth County Supervisors Tuesday canvassed or approved the election, which brought 191 voters to the polls.

The election was needed to re-pass the Hinton School district's revenue purpose statement, which explains how the school district plans to spend the 1 cent sales tax money that is received from what used to be the School Infrastructure Local Option (SILO) tax.

At the special election 184 voters were in favor of and seven against the change from the SILO tax to the State Secure and Advanced Vision for Education (SAVE) tax.

Re-passing the revenue statement was required after the 2008 Legislature decided to replace the SILO tax with the statewide SAVE tax.

The SAVE tax will allow more immediate money up front should the school district need to borrow against the money.

Hinton tax payers will see no change in taxes as they were already paying a 1-cent sales tax.

The supervisors also:

*Appointed Debra Combs as Sioux Township clerk to replace Carolyn Knapp.

*Decided that anyone interested in filling two positions on the county's judicial magistrate appointing committee should submit a letter of intent and qualifications to the auditor's office by 5 p.m. Dec. 22. At their Dec. 23 meeting, the supervisors will appoint two members to the committee.

*Approved an agreement with Floyd Valley Hospital for the hospital to use the county's enclosed trailer in the event of an emergency or disaster. The agreement indicates the county uses the trailer during elections, and that it would not be available to the hospital during those times.

*Decided to cancel their 9:30 a.m. Tuesday, Dec. 30 meeting. The supervisors are required to meet that week Friday, Jan. 2 for new year business. If necessary matters comes to their attention, the supervisors will meet Dec. 30.
