Worker killed in construction accident

Wednesday, November 19, 2008
A 21-year-old Storm Lake man was killed after a steel beam fell on him while working at a construction site southeast of Le Mars, according to a report from the Plymouth County Sheriff's Office.

Jose Gustavo Sivrian, injured by the beam the morning of Nov. 12, was transported to Floyd Valley Hospital in Le Mars at 7:30 a.m. by a private vehicle, the report states.

According to Plymouth County Deputy Lynn Steckleberg, Sivrian was pronounced dead shortly thereafter.

Sivrian, an El Salvador native, had been working for S & L Construction, of Storm Lake, constructing a building for Center Fresh Egg at 35509 270th Street, about a mile southeast of Le Mars between Nature and Marble Avenue, according to the sheriff's report.

The sheriff's office is working with Iowa OSHA (Occupational Safety and Health Administration) on the case, along with the Plymouth County Coroner's office.

Iowa OSHA is not yet releasing any information on its investigation.

Funeral arrangements for Sivrian are being handled by Fratzke & Jensen Funeral Home of Storm Lake.
