No. 14 G-H smacks down 3-0 win over R-U

Wednesday, October 15, 2008

Class 1A's 14th-ranked Galva-Holstein came into Remsen with a perfect record in the Western Valley Conference on Tuesday night but met a Lady Rocket squad with the word 'upset' on their mind.

Unfortunately for R-U, the Pirates were just too strong for the Lady Rockets who were without senior setter Cassie Stoos for the match as G-H posted a 3-0 victory.

"They are ranked 14th in the state and it showed," said coach Kelly Weiler. "But we just couldn't get our blocks up. They moved the ball around pretty fast and it was hard for us to get up in time."

After a close 25-18 game one, the Pirates took control of the match with a 25-8 victory in game two. G-H was able to close out the match with their decisive 25-13 win in game three.

Gina Mae Frericks had a big night from the service line as she was 9-9 with two aces. Diana Loutsch was 6-7 serving with two aces and Kelsey Paskert was 4-5 on the night and added an ace for the Lady Rockets.

Paskert was also the team's leader with three kills on the night. Jen Ruba recorded two and Brittany Ruden had one. Ruba also finished with two blocks.

Frericks was the first on the stat sheet in digs with eight on the night and Annie Miller and Paskert each had four for R-U.

Katie Frericks, stepping in for setter Cassie Stoos, had 12 assists while Tasha Wurth added two more. Gina Mae Frericks and Paskert also recorded two.

"Katie Frericks did well for us to step up and play for Cassie," said Weiler. "She is normally a back-row player for us but Katie did a good job considering she hasn't set for us all year."

Weiler said that she hopes to have Stoos back for Thursday's match-up against Westwood but doesn't want to rush the setter back.

"I hope tonight doesn't discourage the girls," said Weiler. "We have Westwood on Thursday and then Marcus on Monday. Hopefully they don't get set back too much. We just need to get into practice and get ready for Thursday."

The Lady Rockets have not played the Rebels this season as they were in different pools during the WVC tournament.

"I haven't seen them play and I really don't know much about them," said Weiler.

"We were in different pools during the conference tournament so I really don't know too much."
