Emmetsburg edges past Le Mars JV in heartbreaker

Thursday, October 9, 2008
A furious second half rally fell short for the Le Mars JV football team as the Bulldogs lost a heartbreaker to Emmetsburg 24-22 at home on Monday.

After two consecutive one-yard scores - followed by two successful two-point conversions - the E-Hawks led early in the second quarter, 16-0.

However, the Bulldogs' Hunter Rohde made it a one possession game as he took the handoff from quarterback Zach Reuter and raced 49 yards for the score to make it a ten point deficit. Reuter made it an eight point ball-game by running in a two-point conversion attempt.

The E-Hawks put a little bit more distance between the two squads as they scored on nine-yard scamper in the third quarter to make it a 24-8 game in favor of Emmetsburg.

Shortly after, Le Mars mounted its furious comeback starting with a 33-yard touchdown run by Judd Herzberg. Unfortunately for the Bulldogs, they could not convert a two-point conversion attempt and faced a ten point deficit heading into the fourth quarter.

Midway through the fourth quarter, Reuter found Rohde streaking down the sideline for a 72-yard pass play that resulted in a touchdown to bring the hosts to within four. Despite another successful two-point conversion attempt on a Reuter run, the rally fell just short as the E-Hawks stole a road victory from the Bulldogs.

Le Mars put up 303 yards of total offense on the stat sheet but it wasn't enough to keep the Emmetsburg rushing attack out of the end-zone.

The E-Hawks had 212 yards rushing, coupled with 53 yards passing, on the day but were also helped by converting 5-7 fourth down attempts.

Rohde was the Bulldogs' leading rusher with 78 yards on eight attempts, including his long 49-yard touchdown run. Herzberg added a score to go with his 52 yards on six carries. Alex Klein rushed three times for 31 yards.

Reuter was 6-17 passing for 136 yards with a 72-yard strike to Rohde for a score.

With his 72-yard catch, Rohde led the team in receiving with just two catches. Jeremy Bohlke and Herzberg each had one grab for 20 yards while Klein added a 13-yard reception.

Herzberg had a big day defensively, leading the team with seven solo tackles and ten assisted stops. Curt Durr had ten total stops and Bryce Dahm added 10.5 tackles, 5.5 unassisted. Rohde contributed five tackles while Bohlke had five unassisted stops and four assisted tackles on the night.

This team is a pleasure to watch and I look forward to enjoying them the next 2 years on the varsity squad!! What a great bunch of kids!! You cant win them all, but this team has been lucky enough since the 7th grade to have had very few losses. You can tell they play well together!! Go Dogs!!
