Latest cleanup days top the charts

Monday, October 6, 2008

Le Mars residents threw away more than 75 tons of garbage during the landfill amnesty weekend.

The free residential cleanup allowed each residential customer to throw away up to 1,000 pounds of junk at the Plymouth County Landfill Sept. 18, 19 and 20.

More than 270 people took the city up on the offer.

They threw away a total of 156,900 pounds of household waste.

The total from the three-day cleanup topped numbers of past cleanup weekends.

In June 2008, 267 customers threw away 141,790 pounds. In Sept. 2007, 335 customers threw away 138,120 pounds.

The landfill was open extra hours on Thursday to allow more people to participate. The city payed for the extra hours of business. More than 50 people came during those hours, the city report shows.

The next cleanup days will be held in the spring of 2009.
