Blackhawk runners finish strong at Alta

Tuesday, September 30, 2008

The Hinton cross country runners raced to another successful finish Monday in Alta.

Despite finishing sixth out of seventh teams in the varsity competition, the Hinton girls recorded great times in the race.

The Blackhawks were led to their sixth place finish by Haley Hall. The freshman runner crossed 20th with a time of 18:42.

Just behind her was junior Audrey Jenkins. Jenkins clocked in at 18:58 to finish 25th overall.

The next pack of finishers for Hinton was led by Brandi Schindel. The senior clocked in a time of 20:19 to take 38th place.

Allison Howe was two spots behind with a time of 20:34 for 40th.

Rounding out the varsity competitors for the Blackhawks was Judith Mauer. The freshman crossed in 21:19 to finish 45th.

"What I'm looking at is our times are [faster]," Hinton coach Mark Wilson said. "Where last year our times were in the 19's and 20's, now our times are in the 18's."

On the JV level, Jordan Townes paced the Blackhawks with her 10th place finish. The sophomore clocked in a time of 20:19.

Allie Beeck was next in line for the Blackhawks, placing 23rd with her time of 22:34. Not quite a minute behind the freshman was senior Kelsey Teut, who crossed in 23:09 for a 27th place finish.

Two spots later, Crystal Robinson clocked in at 24:33 for 29th overall.

"It's just fun to watch these kids improve," Wilson said of his squad.

In the girls' junior high race, Haley Grenko continued to shine as she finished third overall for her second straight top-10 finish. The 8th grader crossed the finish line of the two-mile course in 10:48.

Wilson said this was the biggest meet Grenko has run in so far this year. He added that he is pleased with the 8th grader's results.

On the boys' side, Daniel Grigsby competed on the JV level Monday afternoon. The junior earned a medal for his ninth place finish as he clocked in a time of 21:09.

"Daniel has been getting stronger and stronger," Wilson said.

"Getting the medal tonight helps his motivation a little bit too."

The Blackhawks have a full week off from competition before they run at the Kingsley-Pierson Invite next Tuesday.
